How to Save Instagram Photos in HD Quality
Instagram compresses photos when you screenshot them. Here's how to save Instagram photos in their original full resolution.
Instagram displays photos in a compressed format designed for fast loading, but the platform actually stores the original high-resolution file on its servers. The challenge is getting that original file — screenshots and built-in saves give you the compressed version.
Here's how to save Instagram photos in true HD quality.
Why Screenshots Don't Give You Full Quality
When you take a screenshot on your phone, you capture exactly what's rendered on screen at your device's screen resolution — typically 390×844 pixels on an iPhone 14, displayed at 2x or 3x density. But the Instagram photo might be 1080×1350 pixels or larger. Screenshots also add compression artifacts and can include UI elements.
Method 1: Fast Media Downloader Photo Downloader (Best Quality)
Our Instagram Photo Downloader fetches the original file from Instagram's CDN servers:
- Open the Instagram post with the photo you want.
- Tap ⋯ → Copy Link (or copy from browser address bar on desktop).
- Paste into Fast Media Downloader and click Download.
- Save the full-resolution JPEG to your device.
This gets you the same file the creator uploaded, before Instagram applied any display-layer compression.
Method 2: Right-Click on Desktop (Quick and Easy)
If you're on a computer and the account is public:
- Navigate to the post on instagram.com.
- Right-click the photo.
- Select "Save image as…"
- Save it to your computer.
Note: This saves the version Instagram serves in the browser, which may still be slightly compressed compared to the absolute original. Fast Media Downloader fetches a higher-resolution source.
Method 3: View Page Source (Advanced)
For desktop users comfortable with browser DevTools:
- Open the Instagram post.
- Press F12 to open DevTools → Network tab.
- Filter by Img and reload the page.
- Find the largest image file (sort by size) — this is the HD version.
- Open the URL directly and save.
This works but is cumbersome for regular use.
Tips for Maximum Quality
- Download from desktop when possible — desktop browsers sometimes receive higher-res image sources than mobile.
- Download soon after posting — Instagram occasionally re-compresses old images.
- For carousels, use Fast Media Downloader's Photo Downloader to get all slides at once.
Saving Photos on iPhone
- Long-press the downloaded image.
- Tap "Save to Photos".
- It appears in your Photos app under Recents.
The result is the original JPEG at full resolution — no compression, no watermark.
